Overview

Wind is one of the first things that decides whether a day at sea goes smoothly or turns difficult. Our strong wind alerts tell you early when the wind is getting strong enough to affect your vessel’s safety, so you have time to prepare, adjust your route or wait in shelter.

Every alert has a color, a name and a wind speed that sets it off. Those three things never change across all MWI solutions. A skipper on deck, a captain on the bridge and a shore team in the office all see the same signal and understand it the same way. When everyone reads the situation alike, decisions come faster and with more confidence.

How the level is triggered

For each alert, we watch two numbers at once: the sustained wind and the gusts. Whichever one crosses its threshold first sets the alert level.

This means a strong gust can raise the alert even while the average wind stays moderate. We designed it this way on purpose. A steady wind is something you can see coming and adapt to. A sudden gust is what catches a vessel off guard, so we want you to know about it before it happens.

Alert levels

AlertNameSustained windGustsWhat it means
mwi wind -yellowYellowNear Gale alert> 27 kts> 33 ktsConditions are getting rough. A good time to check your plan, secure equipment and brief the crew.
mwi wind medium 01OrangeGale alert> 33 kts> 40 ktsStrong wind and building seas. Operations and navigation need extra care, and smaller vessels should think about staying sheltered.
mwi wind red 01RedStrong Gale alert> 40 kts> 47 ktsDemanding conditions for most vessels. Rethink routes and sensitive operations.
mwi wind purple 01PurpleStorm alert> 47 kts> 55 ktsDangerous conditions. Safety comes first: avoid the area or seek shelter wherever you can.

An alert goes off as soon as either column is crossed, the sustained wind or the gusts, whichever comes first.

Beaufort scale reference

For quick translation into the familiar scale:

Yellow (Near Gale) lines up with Beaufort force 7

Orange (Gale) with force 8, Red (Strong Gale) with force 9

Purple (Storm) with force 10 and above.
